How To Install
Step 1 - Find A Safe location
You'll want to find a wall doesn't have anything above where you'll be putting the shelf. Cats will run up and down the shelves. This could cause anything above it to fall on them. Safety is the most important thing.
Once you find a wall you'll want to start thinking about where to place it. If you are buying more than one you can space them anywhere from a foot to two feet apart. We were surprised how high cats could jump when we removed one a shelf and they could still make it to the top one.
Step 2 - Find A Stud
This is the most important step. Finding a stub is also the most obnoxious step as well. If you can get through this all else is easy.
Using a simple cheap stud finder will do the trick. Depending on what model stud finder you have they will normally beep with a sound and the light will be a solid green. As you can see in this video we find one side of the stud and then find the other side.
Now anywhere in between your two marks you will be able to drill a hole.
Drill The First Hole
First the most part of this step is selecting the correct drill bit. If you select one that's too big the screw will swim inside the hole and not secure the shelf. You'll need a 5/32 drill bit.
If you purchased the Easy Installation Kit then it will come with the correct size drill bit.
Finding the next stud
We built our shelves to follow common housing stud regulations. In most homes studs are 16 inches apart which is the exact distance in our pre-drilled holes.
In this video we show you how to locate the second drill hole. On the shelf there are pre-drilled holes, use them to find the next stud. The holes are a standard 16 inches apart.
Caution, please use your stud finder to confirm that a stud is actually there before drilling.
Mounting The Shelf
If you haven't already used the same drill bit 5/32 and drill a hole into the second stud.
Now you are ready to mount the shelf. This part is simple but can get a little tricky balancing the shelf, drill and screw. If you have a friend, have them hold the shelf in place over the pre-drilled holes while you screw in the screws.
You'll see in our video we have done it ourselves with the assistance of a tools to hold the shelf in place while screwing.
